Operation Lone Star 2011: Call for Volunteers
Written by Post Public Information Representative, Jun 15, 2011, 0 Comments
This will be the 4th year we conduct Operation Lone Star (OLS); a disaster emergency management operation mass services simulation, which also provides health care for those in need. This year OLS will be conducted from August 1-5 at the Civic Center and we are finalizing details to also conduct a clinic in Rio Bravo, Texas (to serve the entire southern county area including El Cenizo and other communities). This year more than ever, due to budget constraints and the economic situation, more persons are in need of health care. “We do not want persons to wait until they are ill, early detection is critically important to safeguard health and wellness,” said Dr. Hector F. Gonzalez, Director of Health for the City Of Laredo OLS is a partnership between The City of Laredo, the City of Laredo Health Department (CLHD), Webb, Zapata and Jim Hogg County Officials, Texas Department of State Health Services, joint Military Command (Texas Army National Guard, Texas State Guard, Texas Air Guard, U.S. Army, and Special Task Force), the Laredo Health Coalition and many others. This year we are just starting preparations as initially there was no funding; therefore, we are making a call for volunteers. In years past, due to earlier planning, we had plenty of volunteers. In addition to the military, this operation will require about 300 civilian volunteers per day and we are nowhere near that number. We are asking the Laredo and Webb County community for help as volunteers. This is a great way to give back to your community. We welcome as many as 200 volunteers. Sign up today! If anyone is interested in volunteering, please call 795-4951, 795-6017 or 795-4950.
