GOVERNOR PERRY EXTENDS DISASTER DECLARATION BANNING THE SALE AND USE OF ALL FIREWORKS

Courtesy Larry Sanchez,

(Laredo, Tx)-Texas Governor Rick Perry has approved the extension of the disaster declaration banning the sale and use of all fireworks in the Unincorporated Areas of Webb County until 7 a.m. on July 5, 2011.  On Wednesday, Webb County Judge Danny Valdez issued a county disaster declaration banning the sale and use of all fireworks by anyone other than a licensed pyrotechnics expert at permitted events.

The ban was only good for sixty hours.  Immediately following the disaster declaration, a request was made to the governor’s office to extend the ban.

“We want to thank Governor Rick Perry for extending the ban in order to ensure the safety of all residents in Webb County,” said Judge Valdez.  “We wanted to be pro-active in order to make sure we wouldn’t have another fire like the one that happened in El Cenizo on April 4.”

Sellers and buyers risk hefty fines for the sale and use of any fireworks.

Residents are strongly encouraged to enjoy the July 4th holiday, but to do it in a way that protects themselves, their families and their neighbors.

The disaster declaration took effect at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15th and has now been extended until 7 a.m. on July 5.
