Both Teams with Identical 5 – 1 – 0 Records
(Laredo, Texas) – After a successful visit to Louisiana over the weekend that saw the Laredo Heat (5 – 1 – 0, 15 points) come home with six critical points with victories over the New Orleans Jesters (2 – 2 – 0, 6 points) and the Baton Rouge Capitals (1 – 3 – 0, 3 points), it is now time to focus on what lies ahead.
And for the Heat, it means a match versus longtime rival, the Chivas El Paso Patriots (5 – 1 – 0, 15 points) on Friday, June 3rd at the Texas A&M International University Soccer Complex. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00 P.M.
Both Laredo and El Paso are currently sitting on top of the Premier Development League (PDL) Mid-South Division table with identical records and the game on Friday here in Laredo, barring a tie, will give the winner some breathing room in the division after having played seven games, almost fifty percent of the season.
The lone blemish on the Heat’s record thus far in 2011 came courtesy of El Paso in early May when the Sun City team defeated Laredo by a score of 1 – 0 when Midfielder Rodrigo Morin found the back of the net late in the game (80th minute).
“Things happen in the game of soccer that at times are hard to explain and in our first meeting versus El Paso it did not matter how often we attacked their goal or how many shots we took, we just could not find a way to score”, said Heat General Manager J.J. Vela
“On the contrary, they took four shots at our goal during the 90 minutes of the game and they were able to score on one of those four shots on a counter attack, not a bad percentage at the end of the day”.
Vela concluded, “Our loss earlier this season to El Paso kept us out of representing the Mid-South Division in the U.S. Open Cup Tournament so a measure of redemption is on the line for our coaching staff and players this Friday here at home but with the U.S. Open Cup now being a foregone conclusion for us, we still need to concentrate on defending our home turf and acquiring as many points, and wins, as possible to keep ourselves in the divisional lead and making the playoffs once again”.
