DISTRICT ATTORNEY REPORTS ON SUCCESS OF SPRING 2011 HOT CHECK ROUND-UP

Courtesy Monica Garcia,

The Office of District Attorney Isidro R. Alaniz held a Hot Check Amnesty and Round Up during the month of May and is pleased to report on the success of the program.   Amnesty began on May 9th and ran through May 20th.  During that time, those individuals who had outstanding hot checks could make payment without facing arrest.  On May 23rd, the Round Up began with twenty-five warrants prepared for an early 5a.m. start.  Over the course of four days, nine people were located.  Of the nine, one was booked at the county jail with the remaining eight immediately making payment in full.

Today, the District Attorney’s Office is preparing seventy-three checks for merchants, bringing the total number of checks distributed to merchants to one hundred and four and the total amount collected during this program to $43,458.06.

District Attorney Isidro R. Alaniz is always concerned about the negative impact bad checks have upon local business.  “Hot checks impair our local economy when merchants must increase consumer costs in order to offset their losses.”  For this reason, the District Attorney’s Hot Checks Unit has sought to obtain restitution for the victims of bad checks and to educate merchants to protect themselves against this white-collar crime.
