Courtesy Steve Harmon,

TAMIU will remember departed alums, comrades and students at the first “Celebration of Life” memorial observation. The event allows the University community and community at large to remember those who are no longer with us, to celebrate their lives and to move forward together.

The Celebration of Life observance will begin WEDNESDAY at 6:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall with a visual presentation of those who have passed on.  Provost Dr. Pablo Arenaz will welcome visitors and guest artist organist Madolyn Fallis of San Antonio will join the TAMIU Choir for special selections.

After an invocation, a series of special readings will be offered by TAMIU alumni and students and president Dr. Ray Keck will offer reflections.  The Memorial Bells of First United Methodist Church will perform. Closing remarks will follow by vice president for Student Success Dr. Minita Ramírez and the TAMIU Choir will perform the Alma Mater. A candle-lit procession led by the Border Patrol Honor Guard Bagpipers will follow to the Lamar Bruni Vergara Memorial Garden where a wreath will be placed.  A concluding reception will be held for family and friends in the Student Center patio and the TAMIU Mariachi Band will perform “Las Golondrinas.”

A national traveling exhibition for libraries, “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War,” opening reception will be held THURSDAY at 6 p.m. followed by a lecture by TAMIU Regents Professor Dr. Jerry D. Thompson. The exhibition will be ondisplay through Wednesday, May 18.

The exhibit explores the struggle faced by President Lincoln to meet the constitutionalchallenges of the Civil War and reconcile his policy preferences with basicAmerican ideals of liberty and equality.

The exhibition includes informative themed panels and feature photographic reproductions of original documents, including a draft of Lincoln’s first inaugural speech, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Thirteenth Amendment.

Organized by the National Constitution Center and the American Library Association Public Programs Office, the traveling exhibition was made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). It was developed by the National Constitution Center and is currently touring the United States. TAMIU is one of only 50 sites across the nation to host the exhibit.  Both events are free and open to the public.
