After receiving hundreds of entries for this year’s annual poetry contest, the best of the best have been selected and are now ready to be recited and awarded. “The poetry contest helps to promote a love of expressing oneself in such a metaphorical way, appreciating the old classic poems, as well as newer styles,” said Maria G. Soliz. “It’s the most powerful form of written communication.”
Entries focused on either one of two topics: “It’s the season for….” or any topic the author chose to write about. Poems could be written in any format, but not be longer than two pages, double-spaced, and be in either English or Spanish. The different age groups included: Group 1: 1st – 3rd grade; Group 2: 4th – 5th grade; Group 3: 6th – 8th grade; Group 4: 9th – 12th grade; Group 5: Adults 18 and over. The top three in each group will read their poems at the Poetry Festival, as well as receive various prizes, including a dictionary, a book of poems and some school supplies. The winners’ poems will also be published. All participants will receive certificates.
The contest is sponsored by the Diocese of Laredo Catholic Schools; Friends of the Library; Laredo Community College; Laredo I.S.D.; Laredo Public Library; Texas A&M International University; and United I.S.D.
