Laredoans are invited to attend a Hero Salute Ceremony this Monday, April 6 at the Laredo Cemetery. Hosted by Webb County Commissioners Jaime Canales and Jerry Garza, the ceremony will honor those who have served and made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The ceremony starts at 8 a.m.
On Monday, Commissioners Court proclaimed the month of April as “Hero Salute Month” in Webb County to show veterans and members of the armed forces their support. During Monday’s ceremony, all Webb County veterans, members of the United States armed forces and their families will be honored. The ceremony is first in a series of events that will honor all past and current veterans and members of the armed forces now serving on active duty.
“The world is a different place,” said Commissioner Jaime Canales. “Everyone should take a moment to remember those that have made the ultimate sacrifice and those who are now fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
“Everyone should be grateful to these brave individuals who have fought and are now fighting for the right to freedom,” added Commissioner Garza. “If it weren’t for them we would not have the freedom that we now enjoy. We invite everyone to join us and show their support.”
Also participating in the ceremony will be the American Legion Post 59 who has adopted a project where they put up American flags at all veteran cemeteries in Webb County to honor fallen heroes. In order to facilitate the placement of the flags, Commissioner Canales has made a donation for PVC pipes that will be dug into the ground to hold the flags and facilitate the job of those who will place over 3,500 flags for Memorial Day. The first pipes will be dug into the ground during Monday’s ceremony.
