El Cenizo Declared Disaster Area

Due to the devastating fire that struck the City of El Cenizo, Texas on Monday, Webb County Judge Danny Valdez has signed a declaration proclaiming the city a disaster area. By making the declaration, the City of El Cenizo could be eligible for assistance from federal and state grants.
One of the grants is the Texas Home program grant that could provide as much as $500,000 of assistance to affected residents and businesses. Valdez also sent a letter to Governor Rick Perry asking for assistance from federal and state levels.
“The people of El Cenizo need help to start the recovery process,” said Valdez. “If these funds are granted, it will be the first step on the long road to recovery.”
Close to 108 homes and businesses could have been burned down had it had not been for the assistance from fire departments from the County and the City of Laredo. Currently, the American Red Cross is assisting those affected by the fire and Webb County Commissioner Frank Sciaraffa has opened up the El Cenizo Community Center for those needing assistance.
