April 18, 2011 City Council Recognitions

City of Laredo Mayor Raul G. Salinas welcomed the Voz de Niños Board of Directors, including Fred Santos, Tina Treviño;  and Karen Mejia, as well as Executive Director Edgar Ricalde, to help proclaim the month, Voz de Niños Month, reminding the Laredo community the amount of time and effort required by the agency to spend with the children who are in foster care, and urging the community to help get involved in their lives, assisting them to adjust to their new situation.

 City Council was a sea of blue and gold as outstanding students from Laredo Junior Bucks, St. Peter’s Memorial School and Alexander High School were recognized for their accomplishments. 

 Joining former City of Laredo Mayor Betty Flores, the Laredo Junior Bucks, Laredo Youth Association were recognized for their 2010-2011 hockey season, who asked the Laredo City Council to consider building a training ice rink to not only help the organization with their practice, but also to help the sport flourish in Laredo, pointing out that the sport helped to steer the group’s coach away from the wrong path.

The St. Peter’s Memorial School 3rd Grade Basketball Team was recognized for being City Champs in the Catholic School Division of the Boys & Girls Club of Laredo Basketball League.  Posing with the Laredo City Council and team are Coach Maria Eugenia Ortiz; School Principal Dr. Linda Marie Garcia Mitchell; and Assistant Coach Jose Valdez.

  St. Peter’s Memorial school students 7-year old second-grader Joey Garcia, IV, and 10-year old fourth-grader JoeEllen Rodriguez were recognized for placing in the National Catholic Schools Week Try Prayer! It Works! Art, essay and poetry contest, hosted by the Holy Cross Family Ministries.  Garcia, who previously won this contest as a kindergartener, placed 1st and 3rd; Rodriguez tied for 3rd.  This is the third year the school has had a first place winner in this contest.  Posing with the students and council are 4th grade teacher Maria Eugenia Ortiz; Superintendent of Laredo Diocese Catholic Schools Dr. Rosa Maria Vida; 2nd grade teacher Alicia Garcia and School Principal Dr. Linda Marie Garcia Mitchell.

Finally, the outstanding accomplishments of the Alexander High School Marching  Band, Drumline and Color Guard were recognized for their awards in 2010-2011. The band placed 5th at State Marching Contest; the drumline placed 2nd at State; and the color guard place 3rd at State.  Posing with the student band officers are  Leticia M. Leal, United ISD Fine Arts Coordinator; Assistant Band Director Lyle Perkins; United ISD Fine Arts Director Javier Vera; band director Jose Valenzuela; and assistant band director Patrick Louis.
