Recognitions at City Council Meeting

City of Laredo Mayor Raul G. Salinas welcomed members of the Border Region MHMR family, to help proclaim and celebrate “INTELLECTUAL & DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH IN LAREDO, TEXAS,” reminding members of the Laredo community that “opportunities for citizens with intellectual & developmental disabilities to function as independently and productively as possible must be fostered in our community.”
Standing left to right with Mayor Salinas are Juan Ramos, Leticia Cazares; Rosa Botello; Laura Rodriguez; Raymundo Garza; Juan Villanueva; Joey Ramirez; Janelle Johnson; Eddie Rocha; and Magda Pedraza.
Later, Mayor Salinas and the Laredo City Council recognized Ricardo Rios of the Laredo Police Department on his retirement from the force after 26 years of service.
Joining Mayor Salinas and Council at the dais were also City Manager Carlos Villarreal and Deputy Police Chief Gilberto Navarro.
The United South High School Cheerleaders were recognized for winning the state cheerleading competition for four years in a row. GO PANTHERS!
Finally, members of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation board, kids afflicted with the disease and their families and Dr. Marcus Nelson, Laredo I.S.D. Superintendent, this year’s Chair for the annual JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising event were on hand to invite Mayor Salinas and the Laredo City Council as well as challenge the entire City of Laredo to join them to help raise funds to help battle this disease. Les Norton listened on as Dr. Nelson spoke about the debilitating statistics of TYPE I diabetes; Bruce Werstak, whose teenage daughter has battled the disease for years also listens on. Brave teenagers Gary and Selika, who also have TYPE I diabetes were part of the presentation, as well as Letty Garcia, Special Events Coordinator for JDRF and Araceli Alvarado, Selika’s mom.
