( CORPUS CHRISTI ) A project to upgrade the Kansas City Southern Railroad’s crossing at State Highway 44 (SH 44) inside the city limits of Alice in Jim Wells County will cause the closure of SH 44 for two days on the weekend of February 12 and 13, 2011.
Weather permitting, crews will begin work on February 12 at approximately 7 a.m. and will work 24-hours per day until the project is completed sometime on February 13. Local eastbound traffic will be detoured off SH 44 on to Front Street while local westbound traffic will be detoured off SH 44 on to Main Street in the city.
Truck traffic will be detoured around the city by following changeable message signs erected by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Eastbound truck traffic on SH 44 will be detoured first on to Business Highway 281 (BUS 281) then to Farm to Market Road 1352 (FM 1352), which will become Farm to Market Road 665 (FM 665) and finally on to Farm to Market Road 1931 (FM 1931) where it will re-connect to SH 44 east of Alice. Westbound truck traffic on SH 44 will be detoured first on FM 1931 outside of Alice , then to FM 665 which will become FM 1352 and then turn on BUS 281 where it will re-connect to SH 44 west of Alice . Train traffic on this line will be halted until the project is completed.
The$180,000 project, funded through the State Railroad Grade Crossing Replanking Program, will remove the existing railroad planking and upgrade the railroad crossing. TxDOT will also be adjusting the grade of the roadway to match the improved railroad crossing. TxDOT is coordinating the road closure and detour plans with the City Alice. The State Railroad Grade Crossing Replanking Program was originally authorized by the Texas Legislature in 1979 to provide funds for replacing worn-out grade crossings located on the state highway system.
