Former Laredo Heat Player Taken 21st Overall in MLS SuperDraft

Leone Cruz Played in Laredo in 2007 and 2008

 LAREDO, Texas- Former Laredo Heat Soccer Club player Leone Cruz was taken in the 2nd Round as the 21st overall pick in the Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft by the Seattle Sounders FC (via a trade from DC United).  Cruz played collegiately for four years at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, the only NCAA-Division One soccer program in the State of Texas, and in summer of 2007 and 2008, Leone applied his trade as a member of the Laredo Heat where he was instrumental in the Heat’s Premier Development League (PDL) Championship in 2007 and in the Heat’s appearance in the 2008 PDL Championship Game which they lost to the Thunder Bay (Canada) Chill in penalty kicks.

The Seattle Sounders FC  are members of the MLS’ Western Conference that includes Chivas USA, 2010 MLS Cup Champion Colorado Rapids, FC Dallas (2010 MLS Cup Finalist), Houston Dynamo, Los Angeles Galaxy, Real Salt Lake, San Jose Earthquakes, the expansion Portland Timbers and the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

While in Laredo, the 6’1”, 172 lbs Cruz was a very dedicated player that showed up to practice on time and on game days would always be ready to play.

We know he will do well”, mentioned Heat General Manager J.J. Vela.
