DEL RIO, TEXAS – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Del Rio Port of Entry during the busy Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend kept their eyes sharp and seized alleged cocaine valued at $1.7 million in a vehicle driven by a local man. The seizure occurred on Jan. 14 at the International Bridge . A CBP officer referred a 1997 Chevy Cheyenne pickup driven by a 47-year-old male Mexican citizen from Del Rio for a secondary examination. During an intensive secondary inspection, CBP officers discovered anomalies in the rear part of the truck and discovered a total of 21 packages that contained 54 pounds of alleged cocaine hidden in the head rack and in barrels of roofing cement. The cocaine has an estimated street value of $1.7 million.
CBP officers turned the driver over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI) special agents for further investigation.
“Our frontline officers maintained a strong enforcement posture at the port despite the heavier holiday weekend traffic and their consistent attention to detail reeled in a significant load of narcotics,” said Michael Perez, CBP Port Director, Del Rio .
