LAREDO – A Child Passenger (CPS) Safety Training Workshop will be held January 11-14, 2011 at the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Laredo District Office. The four-day CPS technician training course, sponsored by Safe Riders, will train and equip persons to provide hands-on assistance to parents and caregivers regarding the correct selection and use of child safety seats. Persons completing this course will receive a two-year (renewable) certification.

“You can’t educate the public enough when it comes to child passenger safety. At times, we still see children improperly restrained at our child car seat check events. This tells us we need to continue educating parents for their children’s sake,” said Blanca Treviño-Castro, a local CPS certified technician and TxDOT employee.

Safe Riders program is 100% funded by the Texas Department of Transportation with administration of the program by the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS). TDSHS is tasked with lowering the amounts of injuries to children by offering child passenger safety trainings and education statewide. Safe Riders has been funded by TxDOT for the past 25 years.

Frank Luera of the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) in Austin said, “State Senator Judith Zaffirini helped sponsor a bill that changed the current booster seat law to address keeping children in their safety seats for a longer amount of time. The Senator has been a great champion in keeping children safe when being transported in vehicles in Texas .”
