Humor helps people to get through the hard times and that is exactly what the One City, One Book will be a free offering with their next event, the movie screening of “The Three Amigos,” a hilarious, backwards version of The Magnificent Seven,” the movie on which this year’s book selection, “Into the Beautiful North,” by Luis Alberto Urrea, is based.  Everyone is welcome to attend and enjoy popcorn and a wonderful movie.  Just bring 5 cans of non-perishable food per person to attend.

In “The Three Amigos,” silent film stars Lucky Day, Dusty Bottoms and Ned Nederlander (Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short) get fired and they take a job offer from Mexico: Doing a show with El Guapo, supposedly the most famous actor there. Traveling there in hope of getting good money, they arrive only to learn soon that El Guapo is not an actor, but a cruel gang leader suppressing people. He abducts the mayor’s beautiful daughter Carmen (to be his wife) in revenge for the people’s cry for help. Now, all hopes of the village folks rest on the weak shoulders of three minor-talented actors, who can’t just walk off the set this time.  A contemporary pop culture classic.

“Into the Beautiful North” opens up with 19-year old Nayeli who works at a taco shop in her Mexican village and dreams about her father, who journeyed to the United States when she was young in search of work.  Recently, it has dawned on her that he isn’t the only man who has left town.  In fact, there are almost no men in the village – they have all gone north, looking for work.  While watching “The Magnificent Seven,” Nayeli decides to go north herself and recruit seven men – her own “Siete Magníficos” to repopulate her hometown and protect it from the bandidos who plan on taking it over.
