Laredo, Texas (Webb County) – The Webb County Sheriff’s Explorers program in conjunction with the City of El Cenizo, will be conducting an outdoor service project on Saturday, August 7th, 2010, from 9 a.m. – 12 noon at El Cenizo Municipal park. This outdoor project will consist of cleaning and planting trees in order to beautify and make the park suitable for children and their families. The cleanup comes after the destruction of the park from the recent Rio Grande flood. The Webb County Sheriff’s Office Explorers and Los Amigos 4-H club will be assisting in cleaning up the park.
Sheriff Cuellar brought back the Explorers program in 2009. The Explorer Program has created new inroads of understanding between youth, law enforcement, and the community.
“ Deputy Explorers receive extensive training and then actively participate in community affairs and non-hazardous law enforcement activities. I have seen these kids show up every morning to our office during the summer, shake my hand and off they go, ready to serve this community, I am extremely proud and firmly believe in the program”. Sheriff Martin Cuellar stated.
Since the program was brought back to life under Sheriff Cuellar’s administration, the Explorers program has allowed our local youth to participate in community projects, outdoor camping activities and events. Most recently, Sheriff Cuellar supported the summer Explorer volunteer program. The Explorers latest stint was a few weeks ago as they volunteered with the flood assistance project held in Rio bravo, with the distribution of food, clothing & water.
The Law Enforcement Explorer Program is a Sheriff’s Office youth oriented program. It is affiliated with the special interest phase of the Boy Scouts of America. It’s primary purpose is to provide, through actual experience, a means by which young men and women may determine if they would like to pursue a career in law enforcement.
