One City, One Book Kick-Off Event:

magCourtesy Xochitl Mora,

The kick-off event for this year’s One City, One Book will be a free movie screening of the classic film starring Yule Brynner and Steve McQueen, “The Magnificent Seven,” the movie on which this year’s book selection, “Into the Beautiful North,” by Luis Alberto Urrea, is based.  Everyone is welcome to attend and enjoy popcorn and a wonderful movie.  Just bring 5 cans of non-perishable food per person to attend.

In “The Magnificent Seven,” a bandit terrorizes a small Mexican farming village each year. Several of the village elders send three of the farmers into the United States to search for gunmen to defend them. They end up with seven, each of whom comes for a different reason. They must prepare the town to repulse an army of over 100 bandits who will arrive wanting food.

“Into the Beautiful North” opens up with 19-year old Nayeli who works at a taco shop in her Mexican village and dreams about her father, who journeyed to the United States when she was young in search of work.  Recently, it has dawned on her that he isn’t the only man who has left town.  In fact, there are almost no men in the village – they have all gone north, looking for work.  While watching “The Magnificent Seven,” Nayeli decides to go north herself and recruit seven men – her own “Siete Magníficos” to repopulate her hometown and protect it from the bandidos who plan on taking it over.
