WASHINGTON, DCCongressman Henry Cuellar, TX-28,  announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will set up a Joint Field Office and a Disaster Recovery Center in Laredo starting Friday to assist residents affected by the recent heavy rains and flooding.

The Disaster Recovery Center will be located at the City of Laredo Public Works Service Center, located at 5512 Thomas Avenue, at the old Laredo Air Force Base. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday until further notice.

The establishment of these offices comes as a result of Congressman Cuellar’s efforts in working with FEMA and the White House. For the last several weeks, Congressman Cuellar worked with FEMA and local community leaders to collect data and report to FEMA and the White House.

“Now that FEMA has established a Disaster Recovery Center in Laredo, I encourage all the residents affected by the floods to take advantage and meet with federal and state agency representatives,” said Congressman Cuellar. “Now is the time to have all your questions answered. The sooner you have your concerns addressed, the better it will be.”

As part of FEMA’s efforts to assist the victims in the affected areas, residents can visit the mobile Disaster Recovery Centers to meet one-on-one with representatives on issues relating to the flood. Disaster survivors can also register for assistance by calling FEMA directly at 1-800-621-3362.

Disaster Recovery Centers will be set up in Laredo, Rio Grande City, and Edinburg, with mobile units also setting up in Jim Hogg County. This comes as result of President Obama declaring Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Starr, Webb and Zapata Counties a disaster area due to the strong rain brought upon last month by Hurricane Alex and other atmospheric conditions.
