(July 17th, LAREDO, TX)-The Broncos gave up four runs in the first inning, only to score six unanswered runs and defeat the Road Runners 6-4 in game one of the series. Game one of the four game series between the Edinburg Road Runners (31-15) and the Laredo Broncos (23-27) at Veterans Field featured RHP Robert Roth (1-1) for the Broncos and RHP Tim Haines (4-4) took the hill for the Road Runners.
Roth ran into trouble in the top of the first when he walked Wilmer Pino to start the game. Pino then stole second base and came home to score when Felix Molina reached on a throwing error by Jonathan Cisneros. Two batters into the game the Road Runners led 1-0. The scoring in the first didn’t stop there for Edinburg. Wilson Batista reached on an infield single and Ambiorix Concepcion hit a three run homer off Roth to give Edinburg a 4-0 lead after just a half inning.
The Broncos offense scratched and clawed it’s way back into the ball game. In the bottom of the first Jason Diaz led off with a single and then stole second and third base to push his United League leading stolen bases total to 24. When Diaz attempted to steal third the throw by catcher Osial Flores went into left field and allowed Diaz to trot home and make the score 4-1 Edinburg.
In the bottom of the second the Broncos added another run. Nick Mahin picked up a hustle hit when he beat out an infield single. With one out, a pitch hit Flynn and Mahin moved to second base. Diaz then singled home Mahin to make the score 4-2 Edinburg.
The score remained 4-2 Road Runners until the bottom of the fifth when, with two outs Kenny Gilbert legged out an infield single. Salvador Paniagua hit a two run homer to tie the game at 4. That was Paniagua’s third home run in as many games and 14th of the season.
Roth hunkered down after the first inning and kept the Road Runners scoreless through the next five innings to allow the Broncos in the game. RHP Brian Buchanan pitched a perfect seventh to pick up his fifth win of the year
Roth went six innings allowing six hits, four runs, and two earned, he walked five and struck out four and received a no decision.
In the bottom of the seventh against Road Runner starter Tim Haines the Broncos took their first lead of the game. Diaz, with one out, doubled. Carlos Arroyo came to the plate and hit a high chopper that he beat out for a single and Diaz came into score on a throwing error by the shortstop Felix Molina and the Broncos had a 5-4 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth D.J Dixon hit his first home run of the year to add some insurance for the Broncos and Laredo had a 6-4 lead.
RHP Maximinio De La Cruz came on in the eighth with one out and recorded the next five outs to pick up his fourth save of the year and secure the 6-4 Bronco victory. Laredo has now won three in a row and seven of their last nine.
