Broncos lose lead late; fall to Edinburg in series opener 8-5

July 9th, EDINBURG, TX-The Broncos (16-25) held a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the eighth before giving up a total of four runs in the inning to waste another good pitching performance by Santo Hernandez and lose game one of the series to the Road Runners (28-10) 8-5.  RHP Santo Hernandez (4-2) made his ninth start of the season for the Broncos against RHP Eric Montoya (6-1), making his eighth start of the year for the Road Runners.   The Broncos struck first in the top of the first inning against the Road Runners when Jason Diaz singled and reached on an error by the Road Runner left fielder Robert Matlock.  Kenny Gilbert then knocked him home with a single to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.

Hernandez faced just three batter in the bottom of the first, getting a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Wilson Batista to end the inning.

The Broncos added two more in the top of the second on a bases loaded RBI walk issued to Kenny Gilbert, his 40th RBI of the season, and bases loaded wild pitch brought Jason Diaz home to give the Broncos a 3-0 lead.

Edinburg cut lead in the bottom of the fourth after a walk and a single Ambiorix Concepcion doubled to bring home Felix Molina and Vincent Blue hit into an RBI groundout to make the score 3-2 Broncos.

Bronco catcher Salvador Paniagua was ejected in the bottom of the fourth when Vincent Blue appeared to swing and miss at a ball that got away from Paniagua, he applied the tag but the home plate umpire ruled it a foul ball.  D.J Dixon entered as the catcher for the Broncos.

The Road Runners tied the game in bottom of the sixth when Molina took a walk to open the inning. Batista then singled and stole second base. On the throw down from Dixon Molina came home to score the tying run; 3-3 the score.

In the top of the seventh Kenny Gilbert was thrown out at the plate and then Dixon, who singled, was thrown out trying to advance to second on the throw.  After the play was over both benches cleared and Gilbert and Batista were ejected. David Fowler entered the game for the Broncos in center fielder.

In the bottom of the seventh with Hernandez still on the mound for the Broncos, the Road Runners took their first lead of the night on a sacrifice fly by Wilmer Pino to bring home Robert Matlock who had walked. 4-3 Edinburg in the lead heading to the eighth.

Jonathan Cisneros for the Broncos started off the inning with a walk and then Doug Thennis, the designated hitter crushed a home run that went off the score board in the deepest part of the ball park to give the Broncos the 5-4 lead.

The lead did not last long for the Broncos, RHP Earl Oakes (0-1) came out of the bullpen for the Broncos in the eighth. He faced four batters and they all came home to score to give the Road Runners the 8-5 lead heading into the top of the ninth.

The Broncos sent Arroyo, Fowler and Dixon up to the plate in the ninth against RHP Julio Castro (1-0) who promptly retired the Broncos in order to pick up the save.
