broncosCourtesy Danny Angel,

(July 6th, ROBSTOWN, TX)- The Broncos were held hitless by Thunder pitching for the final six innings of the game and fell to the Thunder 5-3 in game one of the series.  RHP Robert Roth ( ) made his first start for the Broncos since being acquired after the Broncos victory on the fourth of July.  LHP Doug Brandt made his second start for the Thunder since coming out of the bullpen the majority of the season.

In the top of the second the Broncos took an early 1-0 lead over the Thunder. Kenny Gilbert led off the inning with a single. After a fly out, back to back walks issued by Brandt loaded the bases for Ryan Flynn.  Flynn hit an infield single that scored Gilbert from third to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.

Laredo added to their lead in the top of the third.  Carlos Arroyo walked followed by Mahin reaching on an error. A Kenny Gilbert single loaded the bases for the second straight inning.  Doug Thennis, back in the line-up for the Broncos hit an RBI single to push the lead to 2-0.  With nobody out and runners on first and third Luany Sanchez grounded into a double play to bring home Mahin from third and extend the Bronco lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the third the walks allowed by the Broncos starter Robert Roth proved to be too much.  Ron Fenwick led off the inning with a walk, followed by a two run homer by Levy Ventura, his eleventh of the year, to make the score 3-2 Broncos. Brian Nichols then walked, and Alex Fernandez walked, after a Mike Goss ground out, Kevin Butler laced a two run double into the gap and put the Thunder ahead 4-3. Bronco Manger Dan Firova had seen enough, he went to the bullpen and brought in Maximinio De La Cruz. De La Cruz allowed a sacrifice fly to Mike Lewis to bring home the fifth Thunder run of the inning before getting out of the jam.

The Bronco offense didn’t pick up a hit from the fourth inning on in the game and only had four hits all together against the Thunder in the 5-3 loss.

De La Cruz kept the Broncos in the game with his 5.2 innings of work. He allowed four hits, no runs, he walked two and struck out two.
