Broncos earn the double header sweep; score six runs in two innings and cruise to 6-2 win in nightcap

July 10th EDINBURG, TX-The Broncos scored six runs in the first innings in game two of the double header with the Road Runners and cruised to the sweep in the night cap 6-2 as RHP Matt Gibbs picked up his second win of the season.

In game two of the double header the Broncos sent RHP Matt Gibbs (2-1) to the mound for his first start in 2010. Opposing Gibbs and the Broncos was LHP Robbie Nelson (0-2), making only his second start of the season and second start against the Broncos.

The Broncos offense jumped all over Nelson in the top of the first. Jason Diaz and Ryan Flynn, the first two batters of the inning both walked.  Kenny Gilbert then dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up a bag.  Then on consecutive passed balls charged to Road Runner catcher Alexis Hernandez both Diaz and Flynn came home to score and give the Broncos the 2-0 lead.

The scoring did not stop there for the Broncos, in the top of the second they added four more runs to their lead over the Road Runners.  Jonathan Cisneros and David Fowler singled to start the inning off against Nelson.  After two fly outs The Broncos picked up three straight RBI single’s from Flynn, Gilbert and Paniagua. Nick Mahin then walked and Doug Thennis reached on an error to bring home the fourth Bronco run of the inning and make the score 6-0 Laredo.

Matt Gibbs, for the Broncos was grooving from the first inning until the fifth, Gibbs retired ten in a row at one point until a single in the bottom of the fourth ended his streak.  Gibbs allowed three hits in the bottom of the fifth but picked off Carlos Heraud at first base to shut the rally down and keep the Road Runners scoreless into the sixth.

The Broncos did not score from the second inning on, but never had to. They carried their 6-0 lead all the way to final out in the bottom of the seventh to sweep the double header against the Road Runnners.   

RHP Steve Raburn (0-0) came on in the seventh to close out the win for the Broncos. He allowed a two run homer off the bat of Alexis Hernandez, his fifth of the year to make the score 6-2 Broncos but that was as close as the Road Runners would get.

Matt Gibbs pitched six strong innings, allowing no runs on five hits to Edinburg; he walked none and struck out four en route to picking up his second win of the season and first as a starter.
