Broncos come back from down 6-1 to tally the 11-8 victory over Coastal Bend


July 15th, LAREDO, TX-The Broncos (21-27) notched a come from behind victory when Salvador Paniagua hit his third home run as a Bronco and twelfth of the year in the bottom of the eighth to push the Broncos to the 11-8 victory over the Thunder (19-28).

Laredo sent RHP Juan Peralta (4-1) to the mound against RHP Toro Trevino (2-5) for the Thunder in game four of the five game series between these two teams at Veterans Field.

The Thunder got on the board in the first with a walk issued to Ron Fenwick, followed by a double by Levy Ventura.  Brian Nichols picked up his 49th RBI of the year with a ground out and the Thunder led 1-0.

In the bottom of the first Carlos Arroyo tied the game for the Broncos with his first home run of the year, a solo shot that got out of Veterans Field over the left-centerfield wall to tie the game at 1-1.

Coastal Bend’s offense was in cruise control in this game, as they scored in each of the first five innings. In the top of the second Lamar Guy led off with a double followed by a strikeout by Kevin Butler.  Albert Gonzalez picked up his teammate by lining an RBI single into right field to make the score 2-1 Thunder.  Dustin Smith then went all the way around to third base on error committed by Nick Mahin to make the score 3-1 Thunder.

The Thunder added a run in the third on back-to-back singles by Brian Nichols and Alex Fernandez.  Kevin butler then reached on an error by Jonathan Cisneros that allowed Nichols to score and give the Thunder the 4-1 lead.

In the top of the fourth the Thunder added two more runs.  Dustin Smith was hit by a pitch and then Ron Fenwick singled him home after an error moved Smith to second base.  Brian Nichols then knocked in Fenwick from third with a single to give the Thunder the 6-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth the Broncos offense awakened.  Nick Mahin hit a huge three run home run to cut the lead to 6-4 Thunder; his fourth home run of the year.  Ryan Flynn then singled and came home to score on the Mike Murphy RBI double to make the score 6-5 Thunder.  Murphy came home on an error by Albert Gonzalez that allowed Paniagua to reach base and then Jonathan Cisneros knocked in Jason Diaz and the Broncos had the 7-6 lead.

The Thunder took the lead right back in the bottom of the fifth when Albert Gonzalez started the inning off with a walk.  Dustin Smith then walked, and Ron Fenwick knocked home the tying run with a single; 7-7.  Brian Nichols brought in Dustin Smith after Smith stole third base to give the Thunder an 8-7 lead.

Neither team scored again until the bottom of the eighth when the Broncos put a four spot on the board.  Carlos Arroyo began the inning by singling.  After a Kenny Gilbert fly out Salvador Paniagua hit a two run homer to give the Broncos the 9-8 lead.  Nick Mahin then brought home Cisneros; after he walked; with an RBI triple to make the score 10-8 Broncos.  Ryan Flynn completed the scoring for Laredo by picking up RBI number 26 on the season and the Broncos 11-8. 

The Broncos bullpen earned their keep tonight with four scoreless innings, from the sixth through the ninth to keep the Broncos within striking distance.

Nick Mahin paced the Broncos offense with a 3 for 5 night, with two runs scored and four RBI in the win.
