Texas State Representative Richard P. Raymond (D-42) made an announcement that the City of Laredo received a $2.5 million cancer prevention grant, the largest in the department’s history, from the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). According to Dr. Hector F. Gonzalez, director of the City of Laredo Health Department, Raymond was instrumental in securing the increase in funding after the department submitted an application to help fund cancer prevention through early detection and health education for all Laredoans. Through this grant, the City of Laredo Health Department will work with other health care partners to provide comprehensive cancer prevention education and cancer early detection screening. City of Laredo Mayor Raul G. Salinas and City Manager Carlos Villarreal were also on hand to thank not only Representative Raymond for his hard work on this project, but all projects related to the City of Laredo. They also thanked all of the health professionals who were in attendance at today’s announcement, including Eladio Montalvo, COO of Doctors’ Hospital; Tim Schmidt, CEO and John Ulbright, COO of Laredo Medical Center; Sister Rosemary Welsh and Rosemary Palacios of Mercy Ministries, Gateway Community Health Center cancer center representatives; and the City of Laredo Health Department staff, especially those who will be implementing the grant
