At approximately 1a.m. a Laredo police officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop in south central Laredo when a blue in color Isuzu SUV absconded from the officer leading police on a chase. The SUV headed to the downtown area where the vehicle approached a Rio Grande embankment near a city park and crashed through a fence and drove into the Rio Grande River. The driver managed to elude authorities by swimming into Mexico. The car immersed completely in water was pulled out by a crane after a diver from Texas DPS Austin arrived after several hours and dove into the deep water currents and latched a steel wire around the car’s axel to pull it out. When the vehicle was brought onto the riverbanks the car was searched and several bundles of money were found. Over 40 bundles containing individually wrapped foil bundles of money were found. It is unknown at the time of this press release as to how much the currency seized amounted to. The money had to be dried in order to be counted. The estimates are in the thousands of dollars.
