Broncos; White Wings split double header slugfest at The Vet

broncosLAREDO, TX – The Broncos and White Wings picked up right where they left off last night; Broncos already leading 2-0 with the bases loaded, two down and RBI leader Kenny Gilbert coming to the plate.

RHP Juan Peralta picked up where starter Luis Montano left off. Peralta hit Gilbert to plate the Broncos third run, and then hit Spruill to plate another run and make the score 4-0 Broncos. With the bases still loaded Peralta walked Thennis to score a run and then gave up an RBI single to Gabe Memmert and the score was 6-0 Broncos after two frames.

In the top of the third the White Wings would find their offense. Back to back one out singles would put two on and bring up Javis Diaz, who would walk to load the bases. After a pop out by Kevin Griffin, Salvador Paniagia stepped up and crushed a grand slam over the left field fence to make the score 6-4 Broncos.

Left fielder David Fowler would add a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth to push the lead to 7-4 Broncos.

In the bottom of the sixth Ryan Flynn would walk, Jason Diaz grounded into a fielder’s choice where Flynn was put out 3-6. Felix Adamkiewicz, pinch hitting for Ben Wolgamot, doubled. After an intentional walk to Gilbert, Spruill reached on error to bring home Diaz, Doug Thennis lined an RBI single into right field to make the score 9-4 Broncos.

It would stay that way to the top of the seventh, With Jeff Jamnik in his second inning of work Kevin Dietrich would lead-off with a walk. Brad Menadier would single and then Jamnik would put out Dietrich going to third on a bunt right back to him. With runners on first and second and one out Javis Diaz flied out to deep center and both runners advanced. Kevin Griffin stepped up and hit the second home run for the White Wings of the night, a three run homer and the score was 9-7 Broncos.

Michael Lucas was summoned after Jamnik walked the next hitter and Lucas surrendered a two run home run to Joel Roa, the third Wings homer of the night, that tied the game at 9.

A game that seemed well in hand was dangerously close to being lost by the Broncos.

In the bottom of the eighth with two down and nobody on Doug Thennis hit his first homerun of the year and picked up his third RBI of the game with a solo shot that gave the Broncos a 10-9 lead.

10-9 would be the final as Jonathan MIller would come in and pick up his second save of the year.

In game two it was the opposite, LHP Brian Buchanan (0-1) made his second start of the year for the Broncos and he gave up a leadoff single to Javis Diaz followed by an RBI double to Kevin Griffin and the score was 1-0 White Wings lead. A wild pitch moved Griffin to third and a RBI groundout by Joel Roa plated the Wings second run and it was 2-0.

The Broncos went six up and six down against Misael DeJesus (1-0) the Wings RHP, making his second start of the year.

With two down in the top of the third Roa would reach on an infield single and move to second base on a throwing error by Wolgamot. Another infield single by Arlon Quiroz would put two on and Eric Gonzalez planted one over the left field wall for a three run home run and a 5-0 White Wings lead.

David Fowler hit his second home run in as many games with a solo shot in the bottom of the third to close the gap 5-1 Wings.

The home run ball would strike again in the top of the fifth. Roa would hit a solo home run to make it 6-1 Wings. Quiroz walked and stole second only to allow Eric Gonzalez to hit his second home run of the game, this time a two run show and it was 8-1 Wings.

The Boncos would put a charge into the ball in the bottom of the fifth Jason Diaz led things off with a double, followed by a Wolgamot walk. Kenny Gilbert then walked to load the bases. Designated Hitter Dustin Spruill hit a SAC fly to make the score 8-2 Wings. After an RBI single by Thennis, DeJesus was lifted for Freddy Ballestas who on his first pitch gave up a three run home run to make the score 8-6 Wings.

Michael Barbosa would come on in the seventh and allow a leadoff single to Thennis only to get Memmert to fly out and then Fowler to hit into an game ending 6-3 double play.

The Broncos (3-5) and White Wings (3-5) split the double header at Veterans Field a game a piece. Broncos take on the White Wing in game three of the four game set right here at Veterans Field tommorrow night first pitch at 7:35 PM. Friday night at Veterans Field is United Highschool Tribute Night.
