Broncos rally falls short; defeated by Dillas 7-6; lose series

(June 26th, LAREDO, TX)-The Broncos (11-19) made a late rally with a two run home run by Nick Mahin in the bottom of the seventh but ultimately fell short and were defeated by the Dillas (17-13) 7-6.  RHP Michael Lucas (2-3) made his first start of the year for the Broncos, in place of the injured RHP Dimitri Camareno (1-3).  Making his sixth start of season for the Dillas was RHP Ralph Roberts (3-2).

Lucas ran into trouble immediately in his first start of the year. The Dillas scored four times in the first inning against Lucas, Carlos Figeuroa picked up an RBI single after Jaoquin Rodriguez singled and stole second base. And the score was Dillas 1, Broncos 0. Daryl Jones then singled and with runners on the corners Stephen Douglas doubled to bring home Figueroa and give the Dillas a 2-0 lead. A wild pitch by Lucas brought home Daryl Jones and the score was 3-0 Dillas.  With two out T.J Warren singled to bring home Douglas from third and the Dillas led 4-0 after just the top of the first.

The Broncos plated four runs of their own in the bottom of the first to tie the game. Jason Diaz led off with a walk and stole second base. David Fowler walked and both Diaz and Fowler stole second and third respectively.  Kenny Gilbert came up and hit a two run single to make the score 4-2 Dillas. Nick Mahin singled to move Gilbert to third and Carlos Arroyo grounded into a double play that scored Gilbert and made the score 4-3 Dillas. With two out Luany Sanchez hit his first home run of the season and tied the game at 4-4.

In the top of the second The Dillas re-took the lead when Jason Diaz committed a throwing error that allowed Jonathan Cisneros to score and give the Dillas a 5-4 lead.  Carlos Figeuroa tacked on another RBI single and the Dilla lead was 6-4.

The Dillas added another run in the top of the fifth against Lucas, Figueroa singled and Alberto Cruz knocked him in with an RBI double to push the Dilla lead to 7-4.

In the bottom of the seventh the Broncos scored two runs on Nick Mahin’s third home run of the season, a two run shot  that made the score Dillas 7, Broncos 6.

Steve Bralver, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the eighth struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning and the last threat by the Broncos.

RHP Ramon Geronimo (3-0) came on in the ninth and retired the Broncos 1-2-3 to pick up his fifth save of 2010.

The Broncos travel to Harlingen tomorrow to start a four game series with the White Wings. First pitch in the series opener at 6:05 PM.
