Broncos hold Road Runners to one run on four hits; win 5-1

June 11th, EDINBURG, TX –The Broncos (5-11) held the Edinburg Roadrunners (12-4) to just four hits and one run on their way to defeating Edinburg 5-1 on Friday night. RHP Santo Hernandez (2-1) was on the mound for the Broncos, making his fourth start of 2010. He squared off against RHP Tim Haines (3-1) of the Road Runners in game 2 of the four game series.
Hernandez gave up a run in the second inning after he walked Ambiorix Concepcion. Concepcion then stole second and Dustin Spruill, the Bronco catcher threw one into center field that allowed Concepcion to take third base. Carlos Hereaud hit a SAC fly to give the Road Runners a 1-0 lead.
That would be the score through four full innings. In the top of the fifth the Broncos bats awoke. Doug Thennis started the inning off with a single, followed by a fielder’s choice by Gabe Memmert. Thennis was called safe on an errant throw by third baseman Felix Molina. David Fowler tried to lay down a SAC bunt and he beat it out to load the bases. Jason Diaz, with one out chopped one over the head of the pulled in Molina to score the tying run. Kenny Gilbert came to the plate with two out and hit a two run single to give the Broncos a 3-1 lead.
The score remained 3-1 Broncos until the bottom of the eighth when Ryan Flynn reached on an error by third baseman Felix Molina, his second of the day. After a Gilbert SAC bunt Nick Mahin picked up his sixth RBI of the season with a double and the Broncos led 4-1. With two down Doug Thennis picked up his team leading 16th RBI with a single that knocked in Mahin and the score was 5-1 Broncos.
Santo Hernandez was tremendous. Pitching seven innings and only allowing two hits and one unearned run. He walked three and struck out six while picking up his second win of the year.
Vinnie Dechristofaro came on in the ninth with two on and nobody out and induced a fly out for the first out and a 6-4-3 double play to end the game. The third double play turned by the Broncos in the game.
