LAREDO, TX – The Rio Grande Valley White Wings (2-4) came to Laredo to start a four game series against the Laredo Broncos (2-4). Mother nature disagreed with the plan. With RHP Dimitri Camareno (0-1) making his second start of the year for the Broncos, Camareno retired all six White Wings he faced in his two innings of work. Unfortunately that was all he would get as the rain began to fall in the bottom of the second inning. The Broncos got on the board in the bottom of the first with a Jason Diaz walk, followed by a hit batsman that put runners on first and second. RBI leader Kenny Gilbert stepped to plate and knocked in his seventh RBI of the season with a single and put the Broncos up 1-0 after three batters.
Catcher Dustin Spruill batted next and while he was up to bat Luis Montano (1-0) making his second start of the season for the White Wings threw a wild pitch and the Broncos were up 2-0 after one inning.
Then the thunder came and it was followed by huge flashes of lightning that illuminated the dark Texas sky. Finally, after rain had fallen for twenty minutes or so and the Broncos had loaded the bases with two down in the second, home plate umpire Woody Belle cleared the field and the tarps came out.
Play was officially suspended until today ten minutes later.
The Broncos and White Wings will resume this contest tonight at 7 PM where it was suspended, Broncos with the bases loaded, two down and Kenny Gilbert coming to bat. They will finish yesterday’s nine inning contest and immediately following it’s conclusion they will start game two, a seven inning contest here at Veterans Field.
Tonight night at Veterans Field is thirsty Thursday, all beers are just two dollars all game long and anyone one who had tickets too tonight’s game can use them for both games of the double header at Veterans Field tommorrow night.
