Laredo, Texas (Webb County) – The Gulf Coast Violent offenders and Fugitive Task Force (GCVOFTF) in Laredo coordinated the apprehension and capture of Martin Mata, age 36, a fugitive wanted by the Webb County Sheriff’s Office. The warrant surfaced from a Criminal Trespass case from 2008.

On May 18, 2010, The Task Force developed information that Mata was possibly back at his residence at the 1000 block of Gustavus St. in Laredo, Texas.  When Officers arrived Mata appeared to have absconded to a different location.  After further investigation Sheriff Deputy Task Force Officer, Deputy U.S Marshals, District Attorneys’ Task Force Officer, Laredo Police Department Task Force Officer, encountered Mata asleep at a residence approximately 5 blocks away from an Elementary school, near the intersection of Springfield and Lyon Street.  The Officers made contact with Mata and immediately took him into custody without incident on Friday, May 21, 2010.

As a reference, Martin Mata, was accused in 2008 of a Criminal Trespass. The incident happened at a residence on December 7, 2008 when Mata  apparently crawled into a window of the residence scaring a child and violently screaming at the residents of the home.

Subsequently, Mata appeared in court after requesting a jury trial, Mata was initially offered a 60 day sentence to serve at the Webb County Jail for the Criminal Trespass charge. The trial, which started on Tuesday in the early morning,  was set to continue after lunch break.  Mata failed to return to the court room, therefore,  County Court at Law # II  issued a warrant for failure to appear. The trial continued without Mata present, at the end of the trial the jury deliberated, finding Mata guilty with a maximum sentence of a year to serve and a $4,000 fine. Mata is also pending felony charges for a different case.

“Our Office works diligently with other Law Enforcement Agencies in order to continue to combat crime in our community.  The capture of Mata,  exemplifies that our officers continue to work with the upmost integrity, in most cases resulting in a successful arrest.”  Sheriff Martin Cuellar stated.
