Routine Stop Turns Up Money!

4Courtesy Joe Baeza,

Late this afternoon a Laredo Police officer stopped a white Ford F-250 at the intersection of Mines Rd. and San Lorenzo for a routine traffic violation.  The truck with Tamaulipas plates was being driven by two Hispanic men.  The officer noted that the men were acting nervous during the routine traffic stop.  The officer asked for consent to search the vehicle and the two men appeared more nervous with their responses to the officer.  The driver consented to the search and the officer summoned an LPD K-9 unit to make it to the scene and do a check of the truck.  The K-9 indicated that the rear seat of the truck had the presence of either drugs or currency.

3Two duffle bags were located on top of the rear seat of the truck.  The truck and the men were taken back to the LPD headquarters and it was there that officers discovered that the duffle bags were filled with 33 bundles of foil wrapped currency.  Both passengers of the truck denied having ownership of the currency.  The money is estimated to run in the tens of thousands of dollars.  The money is in police property and will be heading to a bank for accurate accounting.  Due to the impending holiday the exact count may not be ready until Tuesday.  The case is under investigation.  The two men were released pending the outcome of the investigation.
