May 25th, LAREDO, TX – The Laredo Broncos had their second exhibition game of the 2010 on Monday night.  This time squaring off against the Laredo Adult Baseball League at Veterans Field.  In their first game action of 2010, The Broncos took the Tecolotes of the Mexican League to a 3-3 tie.  The Broncos are in the midst of finalizing their roster and took advantage of the exhibition game to see what some of their Pitchers could provide the Bronco staff in 2010.

RHP Leo Figeuro started the game for the Broncos and in the top of the first inning immediately gave up a home run to The Laredo Adult Baseball League’s third baseman Juan Garcia; and just like that the LABL was out in front 1-0.

The Broncos quickly answered with a lead-off walk by 2B Jason Diaz, followed by a LF Doug Thennis single and a passed ball that moved Diaz up to third base.  With runners on the corners 1B Gabe Memmert hit a RBI groundout to first base and the score was tied 1-1.  Figeuro settled down in his second inning of work and retired the LABL with ease.  The Broncos Left the bags full in the second inning when their big man C Luany Sanchez flied out to center field to end the threat.

Manager Dan Firova then decided to use the bullpen by platoon as he lifted Figuero after two innings of work and brought in LHP Brian Buchanan for the third inning. The move worked as Buchanan retired the LABL in order to get the Broncos back to the sticks in the bottom of the third inning.

The Broncos bats finally broke through in the third inning against LABL starter Alexis Alejandro.  With one out DH David Fowler was hit by pitch, 3B Justin Aldrige then singled, SS Felix Adamkiewicz reached on an infield single and CF Bradley Goldsmith cleared the base with a 3-run double that put the Broncos up 4-1, a lead they held for good.

Broncos Pitchers were changed every inning from the second on and managed to retire 10 straight hitters all the way from the last out in the second until the lead-off batter, Hector Davalos reached on a base on balls in the top of the 6th. Nothing would come of the lead-off walk as SS Luis Bracero would ground into a double play and end the potential rally.

The Broncos would add a run to their lead in the 5th inning when CF Bradley Goldsmith was hit by a pitch.  2B Jason Diaz then singled and LF Doug Thennis reached on an infield single to load the bases.  1B Gabe Memmert lofted a SAC fly to score Goldsmith from third and the lead was now Broncos 5, Laredo Adult Baseball League 1.

After going in order in the sixth inning, the Broncos went back to the bat rack in the seventh and eighth innings.  Again it was a hit batsman in the seventh that started the rally for the Broncos.  A single by CF Bradley Goldsmith and an RBI double by 2B Ben Walgomat; who entered in the 6th as a defensive replacement. An errant throw to the plate on LF Dane Yolovich’s SAC fly allowed Ben Walgomat to score all the way from second base and the Broncos Led 8-1.  RF Kenneth Gilbert led off the bottom of the eighth with a double and DH David Folwer knocked him in with an RBI Single.  Fowler then came home to score when SS Trent Thompson reached on error, the Broncos led 10-1.

That was the final as the Broncos pushed their exhibition record to 1-1-1 with one more exhibition game to go.

The Broncos pitching staff impressed tonight with Figeuro going two innings and allowing just one run on one hit; he walked one and struck out two.  From there on LHP Brian Buchanan pitched a scoreless inning followed by scoreless innings by RHP Brandon Melvin, RHP Michael Sanders, LHP Aaron Jenkins, RHP Angelo Morales, LHP Vinnie DeChristofaro, and RHP Brandon Veronee. In all the Broncos on the mound only allowed two hits throughout the contest.

The Broncos are back in action with their fourth and final exhibition game tonight, Tuesday May 25th at Veterans Field against the Laredo Adult Wooden Bat League.  First pitch at 7:35 PM and admission is once again free.
