Courtesy Danny Angel,

LAREDO, TX – RHP Santo Hernandez started his 2010 United League season by issuing a walk to White Wings lead-off batter Javis Diaz.  Diaz then stole second base and moved over to third on a wild pitch by Hernandez.  A few pitches later with the two hitter C Kevin Griffen still in the batter box Diaz came home to score on another wild pitch by Hernandez and quickly the White Wings led 1-0.

2B Jason Diaz provided the spark for the Broncos in the bottom of the first, he reached on a base on balls, then stole second base, reached third on a throwing error by P David Cross, who got the start for the White Wings.  With one out RF Kenneth Gilbert knocked in Diaz with a SAC fly and the score was 1-1.

After striking out two in the first frame Santo Hernandez would K the side in the top of the second.

Hernandez would retire the first two hitters in the third inning and then allow a single to Javis Diaz.  C Luany Sanchez would do the rest throwing out Diaz attempting to steal second for the second time in the ball game.

In the Bottom of the third 3B Ryan Flynn led off the inning with an infield single and then the speedy Jason Diaz reached on an infield single.  After a bunt moved up both runners RF Kenneth Gilbert hit a ground ball the shortsop Jose Fulgencio.  He had Diaz nailed in a run down.  Ryan Flynn took off for home and was able to score as Diaz was eventually tagged out on the base paths and the Broncos led 2-1.

Santo Hernandez was absolutely dealing through his 5 1/3 innings of work he allowed just two runs on two hits, walked one and struck out eleven.  He was lifted in the sixth after allowing a lead off double to 2B Jeff Toth for LHP Vinnie DeChristofaro.  DeChristofaro promptly allowed a double to Javis Diaz, luckily for the Broncos Toth thought LF Doug Thennis was going to make the catch, which he didn’t.  With runners on second and third a wild pitch allowed Toth to come home and tie the game at 2-2, followed by a SAC fly by C Kevin Griffith to push the lead to 3-2 White Wings.

The Broncos bats were silent until the bottom of the seventh when Adamkiewicz reached on a walk, followed by a Ryan Flynn single, and then Jason Diaz was hit by a pitch to load the bases with only one out.  CF Bradley Goldsmith popped out and RF Kenneth Gilbert into a fielder’s choice to end the inning and the threat for the Broncos.

In the top of the ninth RHP Angelo Morales was on the mound and with one out He walked RF Arlon Quiroz and then Morales hit 3B Eric Gonzalez.  After a LF Kevin Dietrich pop out Toth hit a screamer right at SS Felix Adamkiewicz. The ball took a bad bounce, hit Adamkiewicz in the shoulder and soared 20 feet into the air allowing both runners to score.

5-2 would be the final score, the White Wings defeating the Laredo Broncos on opening night at veterans field.  Broncos fall to 0-1 while the White Wings move to 1-0.
