It’s National Library Week, a time to celebrate and highlight libraries, librarians, and library workers throughout the Laredo community.   This week schools and departments across the Laredo Independent School District will celebrate National Library Week, a time to remind the public about the contribution libraries and librarians make to their communities every day.

Laredo ISD began celebrating National Library Week by hosting a proclamation read by Superintendent of Schools Dr. A. Marcus Nelson where he proclaimed April 19- 23 as “National Library Week”.

Julia Molina of Ligarde Elementary School was selected as Elementary Librarian of the Year and Norma Gonzalez of Memorial Middle School was selected as Secondary Librarian of the Year.  Each recipient was awarded a plaque for their commitment to their schools library.  Also, C.L. Milton Elementary School, Christen Middle School and Martin High School were recognized for the top schools with the most book circulated in their libraries.

IMG_0775“Libraries are the heart of every campus and our libraries help our school district thrive,” says Mely Paez, Director of Library and Media Services. “At our school libraries, people of all backgrounds come together for meetings, lectures, programs and to do research with the assistance of trained professionals. Our libraries also help keep people connected, providing a space for students of all ages.”

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.
