Half a million dollars will work to keep Laredo’s border safer, more secure

The City of Laredo just received word that it will receive a $500,000 grant from the State of Texas Governor’s Office Recovery Act on Border Security and Trafficking, to focus on border security.

The Border Security Law Enforcement Grant will be used by the Laredo Police Department for overtime, extra manned security along the riverbank and especially, additional interdiction efforts along the southbound bridges to look for cash, weapons and stolen vehicles.

“This grant will help our Laredo Police Department keep Laredo even safer,” said City of Laredo Mayor Raul G. Salinas.  “I’m glad that Governor Perry is in tune with our city’s efforts to keep not only Laredo, but also, the rest of the state and even the country, secure, by giving us the resources to continue to keep the criminals and criminal activity from coming into Laredo, Texas, U.S.A.” he concluded.

One other aspect the grant will fund is allowing the Laredo Police Department to monitor transnational gangs in Laredo.

According to Laredo Police Chief Carlos Maldonado, this will help the police department to further enhance their collaboration with state agencies; especially, the Texas Department of Public Safety.

“By working together with DPS, we will be able to watch out for gang activity and repeat offenders who are here in the Laredo community,” Maldonado said.  “This funding will be instrumental in creating a safer environment for our citizens.”
