Cleaning Up the Laredo Political Landscape

Courtesy Xochitl Mora,

One of the many wonderful aspects of our country’s political system is the freedom to post signs in support of candidates running for office.  However, once the elections are over, it is important for all those candidates and their supporters, to help keep a community clean by removing all signs.

A City of Laredo ordinance allows posters, portable and painted signs to be posted in the days leading up to the campaign.  Once the election is over, those posters and signs must be removed by candidates or property owners within 10 days after the election date.  That date is Friday, March 12, 2010 for those candidates whose election bid concluded this past Election Day.  Those candidates who are currently still in the run-off elections may keep their signs posted until 10 days after their election date, which is set for April 12, 2010.

“We want to preserve the character of our neighborhoods and keep our community and citizens safe,” said Erasmo Villarreal, City of Laredo Building Development Services Director, whose department oversees the zoning enforcement officers.  “By working together with the candidates, we will all do our part to keep Laredo beautiful.”

Zoning enforcement officers will be out enforcing the ordinance after next week, issuing warnings or citations.

Should candidates have any questions, please contact the Building Development Services Department at 794-1625.
