Laredo, TX—Tues, Jan 19, 2010—City of Laredo Mayor Raul G. Salinas will be in Washington starting tomorrow for the 78th Annual Winter Meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors, of which Salinas is a member of the organization’s Advisory Board.  While there, Mayor Salinas and his fellow mayors will meet with President Barack Obama at the White House on Thursday for a three hour discussion on jobs and the economy.

Salinas has made it clear that his mission in the nation’s capitol will be to partner with Congressman Henry Cuellar in bringing additional federal resources to Laredo.

“Laredo is very fortunate to have Representative Cuellar as our champion in Washington.  By working closely with him, I hope together that we can reinforce our efforts to help Laredo,” said Salinas.    “Additionally, while I am honored to be invited to the White House, my mission is to ensure that national policies respect and reward our efforts on the border.  My hope is to share with President Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder and Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano our need for additional assistance for police, fire and other first responder programs that serve both Laredo and the nation’s interest.”

“I will also seek to reinforce Laredo’s applications for the various competitive grant programs created by the Stimulus bill as a number of agency heads will be at the meeting including the secretaries of Labor, Health & Human Services and Housing & Urban Development,” he concluded.

In an effort to reduce costs of travel, Mayor Salinas will be staying with family members in the Washington area during the week-long conference, and not at the conference hotel.  Salinas explained, “While it would be nice not to have to commute the 20 miles each way to the conference, in these times when budgets are tight, we can all be creative and proactive in saving money.”
