On January 13, 2010 at the 1400 block of Green at approximately 7 a.m. two children walking to a school bus stop headed to Cigarroa Middle school, sisters Bernice 13 and Evelyn Gomez 11, were struck by a vehicle in front of Daiches Elementary School. The driver Fabricio Ramirez, 46, was arrested on charges of Reckless Driving Class B. The LPD C.R.A.S.H. Team has formulated that the speed driven by Ramirez was traveling at 35 MPH on a 20 MPH school zone. He was booked and transported to the Webb County Jail and held under a $3,000 bond set by J.P. Veliz. The LPD would like to remind all drivers to obey posted school zone speed limits to avoid tragedies like this one. This case remains under investigation.
