First ever pozolo cook-off comes to Laredo
Sharpen the knives, perfect your dicing techniques, add the spices – and your secret ingredient – stir the pot and serve the customers: the first ever People’s Choice Pozolo Cook-Off will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2009, as part of the Winter Wonderland festivities.
“We really want to make this a fun, holiday experience, that blends all cultural traditions,” said Mayor Pro Tempore Mike Garza, who is helping to host the event. “Any hot soup goes perfect in the winter, so this will be a fun addition to an already exciting event.”
The rules are pretty basic – pay $50 entry fee, no more than five members on a team, cook everything on site, prepare at least 20 pounds of product – and other such similar cook-off contest rules, all in effort to see who has the best pozole in Laredo. Prize money will be giving out depending on the number of entrants in the contest, but no more than 20 teams will be allowed. Official rules and requirements are on the official application, which can be picked by calling the City’s Inner City Tech-Rec Park at (956) 794-1764 or going to pick one up. The park is located at 202 West Plum. All applications and entry fees must be in by NO LATER THAN Friday, December 18, 2009 at 5 PM.
“The twist this year is that we are going to have everyone who tries the pozolo – for free – of course, as the judges,” says District II Council Member Hector Garcia, who along with Garza and UISD, is hosting the contest and Winter Wonderland ice skating rink. “Everyone will be given ballots to judge, and based on the final tally, that will be the winner.”
The judging will begin by 3:00 p.m.
The Winter Wonderland starts this Friday, December 18, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. at the UISD SAC parking lot, located at 5802 Santa Claudia Lane. It will also run on Saturday, December 19, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., which is the when the pozole contest will take place. Aside from the ice skating, hay rides, musical entertainment and a karaoke singing machine on Friday night will be part of the FREE fun offered for the entire family.
