Laredo, Texas (Webb County) – On Friday, October 23, 2009, a special inspection was conducted at the Webb County Jail by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. At the time of inspection documentation revealed that the Webb County Jail is not meeting the 1 to 48 officer to inmate ratio.
“Unfortunately, we knew this might happen. I’ve been asking for more staff for the jail, but the county’s budget problems have delayed the approval of additional staff. The jail is run adequately by Commander Pepe Salinas but we must have more staff. The options are very obvious: empty the jail or hire more staff, and we all know emptying the jail is not an option. We passed the first jail inspection earlier during the year, but we will not pass the next inspection without more staff.” Sheriff Martin Cuellar stated.
