The State Board of Education recently recognized Maria Luisa “LuLu” Munoz as a “Heroes for Children” recipient. Munoz was one of 15 Texans honored for her significant contribution to public schools in Texas, and for outstanding contributions to the success of the Texas Public Education System. The recognition ceremony was held in the William B. Travis Building in Austin, Tx.
Munoz is a volunteer at M.S. Ryan Elementary School. As a volunteer and PTO member, she strives to create an atmosphere that leads to a memorable school year for every student and teacher at the school.
After working for 15 years, Munoz made a promise to herself that she would play a more active role in her children’s lives. “My boys needed me to be a part of their lives, explains Munoz. “Through education I have been able to play an active role in raising my children.”She was nominated by Ryan Elementary Principal Sandra Munoz and Lillian Swisher, Ryan Elementary Parent Volunteer. Mrs. Munoz was ecstatic when she heard the news that she was selected. “It was an honor to be selected,” said Munoz. “I am not her to be recognized. I volunteer because I love to do it.”
Over the last 11 years, she has volunteered her time at the campus as a parent chaperone, created bulletin boards for various events, answered phone calls at the office, made copies, helped at concessions stands, and has served as a coach and PTO treasurer.
“Lulu whole-heartedly devotes her time and efforts to her assigned duties and performs them with a smile,” stated Sandra Munoz, Ryan Elementary Principal. “She is always striving to enhance the school ambiance with her innovative ideas. Lulu is one of those individuals who will always put effort, with amazing results.”
Described as one of the most dedicated parents, Munoz has put in more than 3,000 hours at the campus; has bought bicycles for students with perfect attendance, has provided ice cream parties for the classes with good behavior in the cafeteria and has helped with the Super Saturday tutorials for third, fourth and fifth graders.
“Ms. Munoz always has a smile with a positive attitude for everything. All who know her call her Ms. Lulu.” explained Lillian Swisher, Ryan Elementary Parent Liaison. “We are truly blessed to have such loving and caring parents here at Ryan and she has been one of them.”
