CBP at Del Rio Port of Entry Seizes Nearly 63 Pounds of Heroin, Five Pounds of Methamphetamine from California Man
DEL RIO, TEXAS – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Del Rio Port of Entry on Monday seized nearly 63 pounds of heroin and more than five pounds of methamphetamine valued at $6.3 million from a vehicle driven by a California man.
The seizure occurred on Sept. 7 at the international bridge. A CBP officer referred a 2007 Dodge Charger driven by Jose Cedri Garcia, 24, a U.S. citizen from Norwalk , Calif. for a secondary inspection. During the examination, CBP officers noted discrepancies in the wheel well area. A non-intrusive imaging system scan indicated anomalies in the same area. CBP officers conducted an intensive examination and discovered 57 packages containing nearly 63 pounds of heroin and eight packages containing 5.6 pounds of methamphetamine in the front wheel wells of the vehicle. The narcotics have a combined estimated street value of $6.3 million. CBP officers arrested Garcia and turned him over to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agents who investigated the seizure.
“Our officers demonstrated their tenacity and inspection experience in discovering one of the largest loads of heroin ever in the history of the Del Rio Port of Entry,” said Michael Perez, CBP Port Director, Del Rio . “Their commitment to advancing the CBP mission of keeping our borders safe and secure is reflected in this magnificent seizure.”
