BRONCOS END 2009 SEASON WITH A WALKFOFF

August 31, 2009-Laredo, TX-The Laredo Broncos ended their 2009 campaign with a come from behind victory, as they beat the Coastal Bend Thunder by a score of 5-4 at Veterans Field, on Monday.
The Thunder jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first. Amadeo Zazueta and Manny Mejia both hit rbi doubles. That gave Coastal Bend a 2-0 lead.
The Thunder added on to their lead in the third. Manny Mejia hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season. That made the score 3-0.
Coastal Bend extended their lead in the sixth. Alex Fernandez hit a solo home run, his second of the season. The score was now 4-0.
Broncos’ starter Gustavo Vasquez was done after six innings of work. He gave up four runs, on eight hits; he walked one and struck out two. Julio Pinot came in to pitch the seventh inning.
Laredo finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh. With one out Mario Mendez was hit by a pitch, and then stole second base. Alejandro Martinez then came up and hit a two run home run, his first of the season. That cut the lead in half, as the score was now 4-2.
The Broncos threatened in the bottom of the eighth against Thunder reliever Carlos Rangel. They put runners on first and third with two outs, as Coastal Bend had to go to their closer Benny Cepeda. Mario Mendez was at the plate when a wild pitch was thrown. Juan Senreiso scored on the play and David Cardona moved to second. Mendez flew out to end the inning as the score was now 4-3.
Franklyn Gracesqui pitched a scoreless ninth for the Broncos, as they headed to their final at bats down by one.
Cepeda came back out for the Thunder looking to finish off the game. Alejandro Martinez led off the inning with a single. Derek Beckman then came in as a pinch runner and went to third on a single by Luany Sanchez. Robert Moron then doubled to score Beckman and move Sanchez to third. Cepeda then intentionally walked Andres Santos to load the bases with no one out. Juan Senreiso reached on a fielder’s choice that saw Sanchez out at home. Ryan Flynn then delivered with an rbi single that scored Moron and gave the Broncos a 5-4 victory.
The Broncos scored 5 runs on 8 hits and had 2 errors while the Thunder scored 4 runs on 10 hits and had 0 errors.
