David Hwang, a California resident, was transported to Laredo to face charges of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child, a First Class Felony.  Hwang pled guilty today to 4 Counts of Aggravated Sexual Assault in the 406^th District Court and was sentenced to sixty years in prison. 

 Hwang resided in Laredo in the 1990’s where he frequented his parents’ restaurant, Ming Dynasty.  Hwang left Laredo in the late 90’s and moved to Laguna Niguel in California. 

 It is in California that authorities received an anonymous videotape and letter reporting of a locked trunk inside Hwang’s home, filled with videotapes of child pornography.  Orange County Sheriff’s deputies responded and seized more than 100 videotapes from Hwang’s home in Rancho Santa Margarita.  Numerous tapes show Hwang engaging in sexual relations with and molesting young children. 

 Authorities from California reported that victims in the tapes range in age from approximately 8 months to 9 years of age.  Several tapes contained evidence of sexual abuse of female children in Laredo, Texas. 

 The sixty year sentence handed down today by Judge Hale shall run consecutively to his life sentence in California.  In California, a life sentence requires a minimum time served of fifty years before a defendant is eligible for parole.  Therefore, Hwang will be approximately eighty-seven years of age before he is eligible for parole in California and available to begin serving today’s sentence for the State of Texas.

 Prosecutor Linda Garza Martinez stated that the victim and her family in this case are still dealing with the realization that after ten years, Hwang has finally been brought to justice.  “They are relieved to know that David Hwang will never spend another day in his life outside of prison walls.”
