August 13, 2009-Amarillo, TX-The Laredo Broncos got a great start by Gregorio Martinez, as it wasn’t enough as they lost to the Amarillo Dillas by a score of 3-1 at Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa, on Thursday.
The Dillas struck first in the second inning. Terrance McClain tripled to leadoff the inning. That was followed by a rbi double by Trent Lockwood. That gave Amarillo the 1-0 lead.
The Broncos tied the game up in the fourth. With one out, David Cardona and Mario Mendez drew walks. Argelis Nunez then singled in Cardona to tie the game at one.
Both starters in the ball game settled down and really held the other team in check. Both Gregorio Martinez of the Broncos and Ralph Roberts of the Dillas both kept the other team off the scoreboard.
The Dillas threatened to take the lead in the sixth off of Martinez. Stantrel Smith doubled to start the inning and then stole third. Martinez got the next two batters he faced out without giving up the run. However, Willie James hit an infield single that scored Smith, to give Amarillo the 2-1 lead.
Martinez was done after six innings of work. He gave up two runs, on seven hits, walked four, and struck out four. Carlos Alvarez came into the game to pitch the seventh.
The Dillas got some insurance in the eighth off of reliever Julio Pinto. Justin Wenger knocked in Stantrel Smith with a suicide squeeze. That gave Amarillo a two run lead heading to the ninth. Robbie Wooley came into the game looking to close out the ball game.
The Broncos put two runners on in the inning with two outs. The Dillas brought in Andy Noonan to try to pick up the save. Robert Moron came up as a pinch hitter and struck out to end the game. The Broncos lost their eighth straight game by a score of 3-1.
The Broncos scored 1 run on 6 hits and had 0 errors while the Dillas scored 3 runs on 9 hits and had 0 errors.
The Broncos are now 21-41 on the season while the Dillas are 34-27.
