BRONCOS BATS PROVIDE NO THUNDER IN LOSS TO COASTAL BEND

July 31, 2009-Laredo, TX-The Laredo Broncos offense went silent for the second straight night, as they lost to the Coastal Bend Thunder by a score of 8-3 at Veterans Field, on Saturday.
The Broncos started the scoring in the first. With one out, David Cardona reached on an error by Leivi Ventura. Cardona then stole second and third base. Mario Mendez followed with a rbi double scoring Cardona. Argelis Nunez then knocked in Mendez with a single. Laredo now led by a score of 2-0.
The Thunder started their scoring in the third. With the bases loaded and one out, Alfred Joseph singled in Amadeo Zazueta. That was followed by a sacrifice fly by Leivi Ventura, which scored Bryan Vickers. Manny Mejia followed with a single of his own, which scored Dustin Smith. That gave Coastal Bend the 3-2 lead.
The Thunder added to their lead in the fourth. With Amadeo Zazueta on first, Michael Lewis knocked him in with triple. That made the score 4-2.
The Thunder extended their lead in the seventh. With runners on second and third and no one out, Leivi Ventura singled in Dustin Smith. That did it for Broncos’ starter Will Palmer as Carlos Alvarez came into the game. Manny Mejia greeted him with a sacrifice fly that scored Alfred Joseph. Carlos Rodriguez then hit a two run home run, his fourth of the season. That made the score 8-2.
Palmer went six plus innings for the Broncos giving up seven runs on 12 hits. He walked two and struck out five.
Laredo scored a run in their half of the seventh. Luis Ugueto hit a rbi single that scored Robert Moron. That made the score 8-3.
Carlos Alvarez pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings, as the Broncos trailed by six runs heading to the bottom half of the ninth.
The Broncos went quietly in their half of the ninth, as they dropped the first game to the Thunder by a score 8-3.
The Broncos scored 3 runs on 10 hits and had 1 error while the Thunder scored 8 runs on 14 hits and had 3 errors.
The Broncos are now 17-32 on the season while the Thunder are 23-26. The Broncos will next be in action Saturday August 1st, as they play game two of a four game series against the Coastal Bend Thunder at 7:30.
