August 21, 2009-Edinburg, TX-The Laredo Broncos had a seven run lead almost disappear, as they held on to beat the Edinburg Roadrunners by a score of 8-7 at Edinburg Baseball Stadium, on Friday.

The Broncos started the scoring right away in the first.  Luis Ugueto led off with a double and then went to third on a groundout.  Mario Mendez then knocked in Ugueto with a groundout, to make the score 1-0.

The Roadrunners answered back in their half of the first.  With Wilmer Pino on first, Sergio Guerrero singled.  As Pino went to third, the throw from right fielder Derek Beckman sailed over Mario Mendez’s head.  That allowed Pino to score and Guerrero to move to second.  That tied the game up at one.

The Broncos took back the lead in the second.  With two outs, Robert Moron doubled.  Then Ryan Flynn knocked him with a single.  That made the score 2-1.

Laredo tacked on another run in the third.  With two outs Mario Mendez singled, and then went to third on a single by Luany Sanchez.  The Broncos then pulled a double steal with Mendez scoring, to make the score 3-1.

The Broncos extended their lead in the fifth.  With one out Derek Beckman reached on a walk, and then went to second on a single by Luis Ugueto.  Jaime Morales followed with a single, and when the right fielder Hunter Owen booted the ball, Beckman scored and Ugueto went to third.  Then with two outs Luany Sanchez reached on an error by second baseman Wilmer Pino that allowed Ugueto to score.  Alejandro Martinez followed with an rbi single scoring Morales.  David Cardona then hit an rbi double that scored Sanchez.  The very next batter Robert Moron hit an rbi single that knocked in Martinez.  Roadrunners’ starter Eric Montoya was then taken out of the game, for reliever Ricardo Serrano.  That now made the score 8-1.

The Roadrunners got closer in their half of the fifth.  With runners on first and third and no one out, Wilmer Pino hit a three run home run.  It was his third home run of the season.  Then with one out and Hector Garanzuay at second, Carlos Hereaud hit an rbi double.  The score was now 8-5 in favor of Laredo.

Broncos’ starter Gustavo Vasquez left the game after five innings in line for the win.  He gave up five runs, on 10 hits, walked no one, and struck out two.  Carlos Alvarez came into the game to start the sixth.

The Roadrunners got even closer in the seventh.  Hunter Owen hit a two run home run, his sixth of the season.  That chased Carlos Alvarez from the game as Julio Pinto came in.  He finished off the inning as the Broncos now only led by a score of 8-7.

Edinburg put the tying run on second base with one out in the bottom of the eighth.  Broncos’ closer Franklyn Gracesqui came in looking to keep Laredo up one.  Gracesqui got out of the jam to keep the score 8-7.

The Broncos did no damage in the ninth, as Gracesqui came out looking to finish up the game.  He did just that as the Broncos snapped the 15 game losing streak by a score of 8-7.

The Broncos scored 8 runs on 16 hits and had 1 error while the Roadrunners scored 7 runs on 12 hits and had 2 errors.

The Broncos are now 22-48 on the season while the Roadrunners are 39-31.  The Broncos will next be in action Friday August 22nd, as they play game three of a four game series against the Edinburg Roadrunners in Edinburg at 7:05.  You can listen to that game and all 80 Broncos games this year on our website www.laredobroncos.com through our partners at www.sportsujuice.com.
