July 3, 2009 9:40p.m. (Laredo, Texas) – Calling him an “innovative leader in education,” the Laredo ISD Board of Trustees unanimously voted to name Dr. A. Marcus Nelson as the lone finalist in the nation-wide search for a new Superintendent of Schools.  Dr. Nelson is currently the Associate Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for the Judson Independent School District, a suburb of San Antonio, Texas.  In this position, he serves as the chief academic officer and second in command for the district’s 21,000 students and 1,400 classroom teachers.

Board President Jose A. Valdez said that Dr. Nelson is an excellent fit for LISD.  “We had a very strong field of candidates.  Dr. Nelson’s many strengths clearly matched up with our district’s needs,” Valdez said.

Dr. Nelson is a native of San Antonio, Texas and a graduate of Converse Judson High School.  In 1994, he attained an undergraduate degree in Secondary Education from Abilene Christian University.  While establishing himself as a curriculum and instruction expert, Dr. Nelson obtained several graduate degrees, including two Masters and a Doctoral degree in Educational Administration from Texas A & M University-Commerce.

During the course of his career, Dr. Nelson has served as an elementary fifth grade teacher, high school math teacher, middle school vice principal, high school assistant principal, high school principal, and Director of Secondary Schools.

“I am tremendously thankful to the Board of Trustees for allowing me the opportunity to lead the Laredo Independent School District,” Nelson said.  “I understand that Laredo is steeped in tradition, pride, and high expectations.  I’m extremely excited to work with our parents, community, and staff on ensuring that the quality of education provided by Laredo ISD is the absolute best it can be for our students.”
