Independence Day is a cause for celebration across the United States; however, the National Safety Council reminds motorists to use extra caution on the roadway. The NSC estimates 381 people will die in traffic crashes this Fourth of July weekend. The NSC supports state-level police interventions to keep impaired drivers off the roads and urges Americans to buckle up.
Whether behind the wheel or in the passenger seat, seat belts are the most effective protection against serious crash injuries. Studies show seat belts are 45 percent effective in preventing fatalities when worn correctly. This holiday weekend, NSC estimates seat belts will save 336 lives; an additional 88 lives could be saved if all passengers wore seat belts.
July, one of the deadliest months for motor vehicle crashes, is also a good time for parents to stress the importance of wearing seat belts to teen drivers. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for young people. In 2007, 6,552 fatal crashes involved drivers 16-20 years old, resulting in the deaths of 3,108 young drivers, 1,967 passengers and 2,437 other people. Help make America’s roadways safer this Fourth of July weekend. Buckle up and drive sober to reduce the number of traffic-related injuries and fatalities.
