Washington, D.C. Today, Congressman Henry Cuellar announced that the Department of Health and Human Services has awarded Webb County Head Start more than $577,000 for salary increases and educational programs. The money is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 that Congress passed earlier this year.

Specifically, $143,027 will be used for employees’ Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA) and classroom supplies, while the remaining $434,617 will be used for salary increases for educational staff, educational programs, staff development, school busses, and other items that will improve the overall educational level of the children served by the Head Start program. A portion of these federal funds will also be used to improve playground safety.

“I congratulate Webb County Judge Danny Valdez, Commissioner’s Court, and Head Start for its model program and for continuing their quest in educating our youngest citizens,” said Congressman Cuellar. “By helping the Head Start program, we are also helping the children it serves and their parents, and we are preparing these students to be ready by the time they enter kindergarten.”

“On behalf of the children, families, and staff of Webb County Head Start, I thank Congressman Henry Cuellar for once again being a leading voice of the Head Start community,” said Aliza Oliveros, Webb County Head Start Director.  “Thank you, Congressman Cuellar, for your interest in helping educate low income children and parents, and for your strong commitment to early childhood education.”
